Car Seat Safety
The National Health and Transportation Safety Administration publishes a booklet, “Child Transportation Safety Tips” and have general and specific information on their Web site www.nhtsa.dot.gov. The general information tells you what to look for in a car seat, how to make sure straps fit, and how to avoid common mistakes. There is also a current list of approved seats.
They also post safety recalls and available state or local resources. Current information on local car seat safety checkpoints is also available from the National Safe Kids foundation (1-800-441-1888, www.safekids.org). The AAP, also keeps current information on commercial products that pass or fail safety standards, and instructions on how to make every ride a safe ride.
