Breast or Bottle?

Breast or Bottle?

The choice between breast- and bottle-feeding takes many factors into account.

Most doctors (and organizations such as the AAP, American Academy of Family Practice, and others) recommend breastfeeding if possible.

But the bottle is still a choice. These factors go into the decision, and if s best to think through each of these:

• Physical limitations: chronic infection or illness may make nursing difficult or even unwise. Certain medications Mom needs to take can transfer into breast milk and may not be appropriate for baby.

• Will you always be able to feed your baby on demand?

• Will Dad feel like he has an adequate role in caring for the baby?

• Do you feel it is the right choice for you? Negative feelings, for whatever reasons, ought to be explored and weighed against the benefits of breastfeeding.

Your doctor can put you in touch with a local lactation consultant to provide more information to help make the correct choice for you.
