Certainly not by dangling wedding rings over the mother’s abdomen, one of the battery of ‘detection’ systems that have been used over the centuries.
Such predictors have an evens chance of being right so it is impossible to prove how silly they are! In fact it is possible to detect a baby’s sex by scientific means.
If a small sample of the waters which surround the developing baby is withdrawn with a syringe, some of the baby’s cells can be examined under the microscope.
The difference between XX cells and XY cells shows up very early, in fact from the twelfth week of pregnancy. But this test – it is called amniocentesis, incidentally – should not be embarked on lightly.
Although it may be done when necessary, for example to detect illness in the baby it does carry some risk to the pregnancy, and to use it just to gratify curiosity about gender would be very wrong.
The only reason that might make such a sex detection test reasonable is the existence of a family disorder which affects only one gender.
For example, if a family has a history of hemophilia, which is suffered by boys only, though the genes may be carried by girls, they may want to try to have only a girl baby. Early tests which reveal the presence of a boy baby who may be at risk may make such a family seek termination.
