Proper Eye Care of Your Baby

It is never too soon to make certain that your baby’s vision is developing properly. Baby eye problems are not just ignorable. There are always signs and symptoms for the odd chance that your baby may have a problem. Most infants have no serious or detrimental eye problems, but there are a few situations where you may need to have your baby’s eyes checked. There is no certain age a baby has to be to receive a full eye exam, so do not wait for your baby to get older.

As always, the sooner a problem is discovered the sooner it can be treated.

Proper Toilet Training Toddlers

The process of toilet training can be a very challenging time for parents and once again there is no user manual to tell you and your child how to do it! In this section parents share their experiences, good and bad. I know of many parents who have found this one of the most difficult times in their household, and in particular when you feel under pressure to get your child toilet trained before going to nursery or pre-school.

It can be a difficult time and it may push your patience to the edge, so please try and remember that all children are different and develop their life skills at various times, they are not all the same.

Unfortunately, many parents don’t try to find resources to help potty traininguntil they have already failed by using their own methods. Potty training is a tenuous time in the relationship between parent and child, and getting all the information you can ahead of time will things go a lot more smoothly.

You can help potty training go easier by taking your time. Stop putting pressure on your child and yourself to get it done as quickly as possible. The truth is that the more pressure you put on each of you, the less likely you will succeed.

Make Proper Arrangement of Healthy Sleep for Baby

A great way to do a little research before hand is to pick up a copy of Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child. Dr Marc Weissbluth, a well-regarded pediatrician and dad of four, penned the book. The author helps identify the difference between daytime and nighttime sleep, how to cope with the crybaby syndrome, common mistakes parents make in attempting to put an infant to bed along with gobs of other invaluable tidbits.

Many of us need this magical wonder just to fall asleep with a snoring husband or heavy-breathing dog.

Especially in apartments and condos, shared walls by noisy neighbors can become frustrating for you and baby. The ever-popular humidifier with a constant hum can work magic and is great for dry climates and winter months when the heat is kicked on full blast. Some nurseries have fans overhead that help create a soft noise. Bring in a CD player or set your iPod in the speaker cradle to soft, classical music to get the baby to sleep — this is supposed to improve creativity later in life as well.

Adjust the baby’s biological clock:  Let your baby go to bed at a fixed time, nap time not too long, the establishment of normal sleep patterns.

Baby Clothes & Care for the First Six Weeks

A little preparation goes a long way when shopping or registering for baby clothes. You’ll be changing your baby’s clothing several times a day – babies can be messy! – so make sure outfits are uncomplicated and open easily for diaper changes. In general, you want soft, comfortable clothing with no irritating tags or seams.

Tips for healthy summer newborns

Although babies born in the warmer summer months are less likely to get coughs and sniffles in their first few weeks of life, special care needs to be taken in other areas to ensure that your baby is healthy and comfortable.

Too hot?
Newborn babies can’t tell you if they are too hot or cold, but there are ways to check. Place your hand across your baby’s back underneath their clothes, or on the back of their neck. They should feel warm, not hot or cold. Feeling a baby’s hands and feet is not an accurate way of telling whether they are cold or hot, as a baby’s hands and feet are usually slightly cooler than the rest of his or her body.

Baby Care and Cleaning Tips

Babies sure take up a lot of time. There’s the feeding, the clothing, the rocking, the consoling. They’re also incredibly messy. Still, you probably wouldn’t dream of bringing harsh cleaners into your baby’s nursery, or cleaning the assorted toys, pacifiers, and hygiene products with them. Our green cleaning kit is great for keeping most of baby’s things clean, sanitary, and smelling fresh.

Baking soda is the star of the show when it comes to the general cleaning of your children’s belongings.

Safely clean the crib and baby mattress by wiping them down with a damp sponge sprinkled with baking soda. Changing tables and playpens are more great places to use baking soda. Be sure to rinse thoroughly!

For green cleanups on the go, mix up a baking soda and water solution in a small, closeable spray bottle. Take this bottle with you on outings and you’ll be ready for nearly anything.

Healthy Sleep for Kids

We spend an average of one-third of our lives asleep in bed. While this may be a fact we have all heard before, it’s a figure that still loses none of its impact. Sleep is essential for each and every one of us. It restores our immune system, is required for laying down memory, renews energy levels, restores mental function and is essential for physical growth.

It is important to put your child to bed at the same time every night. This will help her body clock to stay on track and make it easier for her to fall asleep quickly. Changing the bed time everyday will make it harder for her to settle down and get to sleep.

It’s a good idea to teach your baby that nighttime is different to daytime from the start. During night feeds you may find it helpful to:
1. keep the lights down low

2. not talk much and keep your voice quiet

3. put your baby down as soon as they’ve been fed and changed

4. not change your baby unless they need it

How to Wash your Baby Properly

As a new mother, washing your baby’s hair can feel a bit daunting. Some babies don’t like being naked.  It involves holding them with one hand, and you might be worried about shampoo stinging their eyes.

If, however, you don’t have a baby bath there are some inexpensive, practical alternatives that you can use until your baby is old enough to go into the big bath. For example, a plastic household basin functions in exactly the same way as a baby bath and is useful because, like a baby bath, it can be carried anywhere you choose.

Kitchen or bathroom sinks are also practical because they are generally at a comfortable height so you don’t have to bend over too much, and they often have additional counter space to the side.

Here are a few tips to make washing your baby’s hair easier.

Choose baby natural shampoo. Baby natural shampoo should be paraben free and SLS free. It will soft on your baby’s skin and won’t sting her eyes should a little bit of lather get in.

If you’re unsure, you can ask your midwife to show you how to wash your baby’s hair.

Bathing your baby

Most of the parents are very exciting about their first baby. However, giving a bath to newborn baby can be the most intimidating experience for first-time parents. Bathing a baby is task that demands your full attention and concentration. Even for a second, taking your eyes off the baby during bathing baby can go wrong in even a very small amount of water.

Bathing water should not be too hot or too cold. Ideally, you can check the water temperature by dipping your finger in water; it is suitable if you feel it warm. You can also purchase products which alert you when your baby’s bath water is too hot. It is worthwhile to start the bathe by damping the feet first.

Lay your baby on a towel when sponge bathing or before you pop them in their own baby tub. It’s important to avoid putting them inside an adult bath because this reduces the chances of accidents and increases your control as a parent when washing, if you wash your baby in something smaller. Always ensure you have positioned the babies head over your arm and that the baby is safe from drowning when in the tub, for that reason never fill the baby bath to the brim, and instead opt for two to three inches of water.

How to Wash a Baby Hair

In a first week, clean baby’s scalp and hair with warm water of few days once. This good for eliminating dirt and sweat. On first day, needn’t use shampoo. But when baby have enough hair, use soft shampoo.

Here are the steps to wash the baby’s hair:

1. Prepare shampoo, wash cloth, baby’s brush comb, hair lotion and other bathing equipments near the bath tub. You can bathe him first before washing the hair.

2. Rinse the baby’s head with warm water starting from the front to the back. Take the wash cloth, pour some shampoo on top of it and squeeze until it foams. Wipe the wash cloth while giving a soft massage in the head.

3. Rinse the hair and head’s skin until it is completely clean slowly. Keep the direction from front to back. Try to keep the water away from the baby’s face. Though the shampoo is harmless to the baby’s eyes, he would still feel uncomfortable if there is water getting inside the eyes.

How Maternity Leave Affects Breastfeeding Rates

In our culture extended breastfeeding is misunderstood in many ways. I’ve been collecting these misconceptions about it in my head and thought I’d take this opportunity to address them here.

Having a baby is one of the most amazing things you will ever do, but it can be a trying time. Breastfeeding can help bring happiness when it goes well but can worsen the stress if it’s going badly, especially as you’re probably not getting enough sleep! Dads often feel left out but why not join in? There’s plenty you can do to help.

Breastfeeding gives your baby all the food and drink she needs until you introduce her to solids and by eating healthily yourself you can make sure she gets all the nutrients she needs. Breastfeeding can make you hungrier and thirstier than usual as your body needs extra energy to produce milk.

On average you’ll need about an extra 300-400 calories a day while breastfeeding. While you’re feeding, keep a glass of water, milk or diluted fruit juice nearby as you’re likely to feel thirsty. Keep cups of coffee, tea and cola to a minimum as their caffeine content can be passed on during breastfeeding. You’ll also be more prone to constipation during breastfeeding, so drink plenty of fluids to help prevent this.
