Develop Your Instincts

Forget childbirth, now comes the hard part: your first night home with a tiny, demanding creature you barely understand, with your body feeling like ifs just gone through a Bruce Willis ordeal.

Your husband, a huge, demanding creature you barely understand, is paralyzed into utter uselessness. Your Percocet is wearing off and you’d like nothing better than to take a triple hit,(don’t) and this is the moment your baby chooses to start wailing.

This is your first true parenting moment. You can’t lose your head, you have to respond, and you have to learn from this moment. If you think he’s hungry, feed him. If you think he just needs a comforting moment, snuggle. Whatever happens, whether you succeed on your first, second, or third guess, remember what worked!

Your instinct may have told you to change him, and you learned that he was really hungry. Each time you try to unravel your baby’s needs, you continue to develop an instinct for who your baby is and how he’s communicating.

We may be born with instincts, but we also have to work to develop them.

Massage is a great way to help your newborn baby relax and develop a deep emotional bond between you – most babies love to be caressed!

There isn’t a recommended technique so just trust your instincts. Start by applying a little gentle pressure – your baby will let you know if they’re uncomfortable. They’ll often fall asleep during or straight after the massage, so it’s perfect before a nap or just after their bath.
