For the benefit of those of you who weren’t born knowing how to feed a baby there are a few pointers to keep in mind. (By the way this is a skilled act that requires some patience and practice—like learning to ride a bicycle. I don’t suppose you were born knowing how to ride a bicycle, either.)
Make the surroundings as quiet and peaceful as possible, to limit distractions. (He wasn’t born knowing how to do this, either.) Change his diaper beforehand, to remove another distraction.
Get comfortable. Ifs easy to start in a position that’s just a little awkward, only to discover after five minutes of vigorous feeding that you have intensely painful cramps in your shoulder, elbow, and lower back. Once you start on a successful feeding, neither you nor your baby will want to stop, so don’t set yourself up to be interrupted.
Snuggle baby as much as possible. The skin-to-skin contact is a vital part of bonding— whether you’re bottle-feeding or breastfeeding.
