WHAT HAPPENS TO THE MILK IF YOU DON’T BREASTFEED YOUR BABY?
Two factors govern the production of milk: the mother’s own hormones and the baby’s suckling. In the past, if a mother decided not to breastfeed,
she was given hormones to dry up the milk, but there is now a suggestion that this might cause thrombosis. Expressing acts like a baby suckling, and encourages the breasts to make more milk, so it must only be used to make the breasts just comfortable and no more. It also helps if the mother wears a tight bra night and day, because this too helps inhibit milk production.
