As long as great care is paid to sterilizing all equipment, and as long as the right milk mixture is given, there is no reason to fear artificial feeding. In the past babies suffered much illness and even died because of gastro-enteritis, an infection which can be carried by dirty bottles, but today mothers are taught with great care how to avoid this risk.
One problem that worries many doctors and midwives is the way fashion plagues the maternity world as much as any other – and for some time there has undoubtedly been a fashion for bottle feeding,
especially since it became safer with the availability of simple sterilizing methods, and baby milks made by specialist firms. The doctors and midwives point out very rightly, that there can be no question but that breast milk is ideal for the baby, offers the mother many benefits, and avoids the all-too-common hazard of bottle feeding, which is obesity due to the giving of over-rich milk mixtures.
However, having said that, it is important to remember that a mother needs to be totally happy with the method of feeding she chooses, and if for any reason she feels she cannot breastfeed, she should not feel guilt or distress because of it. Everyone is an individual and as long as she thinks it all out carefully, listens to the advice she is offered and makes the decision on the basis of that, then whichever she does will be right for her and her baby.
The hospital will advise on bottle feeding, as will the infant welfare clinic and its health visitors. Always take the advice of the experts on a baby’s individual feeding needs, rather than anyone else’s. It’s always safer to do that.
