Welcome to the world of worry! New parents often fret over every little thing and the temptation to call the doctor for your baby’s first hangnail may seem irresistible, but do your best to refrain.

Before you freak out—or maybe to prevent you from freaking out—read these baby-care tips:

Make sure your medicine cabinet is well-stocked with all the baby-care essentials you’ll need to handle a cold or a fever when it happens.

Keep a list of important phone numbers by the phone—include your doctor’s number, a number for your local urgent care clinic or the ER, and numbers for emergency sitters, if you have older kids.

Tape a dosage chart for baby Tylenol and Motrin inside the medicine cabinet door to save you from having to Google your baby’s weight every time you need to treat a fever or prep for shots.

Finally, ask your doctor to review some ‘when to call the doctor’ symptoms with you. They can give you great peace of mind—and might just keep the pediatrician from labeling you the “crazy lady with the baby.”

Breastfeeding, Health benefits for mother and baby

Breastfeeding:

Breastfeeding is the feeding of an infant or young child with breast milk directly from female human breasts (i.e., via lactation) rather than from a baby bottle or other container.

Babies have a sucking reflex that enables them to suck and swallow milk. It is recommended that mothers breastfeed for six months or more, without the addition of infant formula or solid food.

After the addition of solid food, mothers are advised to continue breastfeeding for at least a year, and can continue for two years or more. Human breast milk is the healthiest form of milk for babies.

Breastfeeding benefits for you and your baby:
Numerous studies from around the world have shown that stomach viruses, lower respiratory illnesses, ear infections, and meningitis occur less often in breastfed babies and are less severe when they do happen. Exclusive breastfeeding (meaning no solid food, formula, or water) for at least six months seems to offer the most protection.

One large study by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences showed that children who are breastfed have a 20 percent lower risk of dying between the ages of 28 days and 1 year than children who weren’t breastfed, with longer breastfeeding associated with lower risk.
How can you feed breast milk?

If the cleft is very small and in the soft palate only, the baby may be able to breastfeed. If the cleft is larger, it will be necessary to use a special technology to feed. Special bottles are made to feed babies with clefts. There is also the possibility of feeding the baby at your breast with a special tube system. To try this option, you will need expert help.

Even if your baby can’t breastfeed, your milk is extra important to him and healing his cleft, so pumping is well worth the work. Doing at least some feedings at the breast with a tube helps improve the baby’s tongue movements and can spread the palate. Another option for babies with cleft palate is very early repair, in the first week of life, which then allows them to breastfeed. Talk to your doctor to find out your options.

Breastfeeding is Good for Mom, Too

Health benefits to mothers who breastfeed are many, including reduced risk of some cancers, reduced risk of osteoporosis, faster return of the uterus to its prepregnant state, steady weight loss based on use of fat deposits laid down during pregnancy for early milk production, slower return of menses which can aid in natural child spacing, and a psychological sense of confidence as the mother provides completed nourishment for her baby.

Questions and Answers About the Nutritional Content of Processed Baby Food:-
What is the goal of infant nutrition?
The goal of infant nutrition is to promote optimal growth and development by providing a variety of nutritious foods. Babies need to be gradually exposed to a variety of tastes and textures geared to their developmental level.

Are infant nutritional needs the same as adult needs?
No. Infants have their own unique nutritional and developmental needs. Adult dietary guidelines for fat, protein, fiber, sugars and other nutrients should not be applied to infants and young children.

Is home prepared baby food safe?
Yes, as long as it is correctly prepared from carefully selected foods. Good clean work areas are very important to prevent accidental contamination. Home prepared baby food should be steamed then thoroughly mashed with a fork or a food processor. Parents need to be cautious of feeding foods that cannot be mashed by the gums as these present a choking hazard.

Are starch fillers used in baby food?
Starches are easily digested carbohydrates, which may be present in baby foods in the form of flour (corn, wheat, rice), tapioca or rice. Whether added or a component of food, starches provide an important source of calories for growing infants. Food starches also help to moderate flavor and control texture. The Food and Drug Administration has determined that food starches are safe and suitable for use in baby foods, and requires that they be listed on the food label.

Baby Bottles and Nipples

Your baby will show you which bottle and nipple she prefers

Finding the right baby bottle is more a process of elimination than a matter of personal preference — at least for you.

Your baby will ultimately decide which is best, so be prepared to try more than one style of baby bottle and nipple.

Selecting a baby bottle shape, material, and size

You will find baby bottles in many styles: some with liners and some without; bent and straight; glass and plastic. Before you choose one to try, or several, it helps to understand why there are so many options.
Baby bottle shapes: standard or bent

Standard (straight, with no bend) baby bottles have been successfully used for years.
Bent baby bottles, and those with liners, are designed to reduce the amount of air your baby will swallow, which can cut down on gas and fussiness.
Baby bottles with disposable liners are easy to clean, but the liner refills can be costly.
