Eternal Vigilance

Beware the little rushes! Those moments when you’re “just” going from the checkout lane to the car or hurrying to get to an appointment for which you’re already late.

That’s when the temptation strikes to not click the latch in the carrier or fully strap her into the car seat.

As an ER doctor, I’ve seen the hits and the near misses, when baby swings out of a car seat, suspended only by her shoulders.

And invariably, the reason the mom (“I am always so careful with her!”) let her guard down was because it was just a quick transfer or she was distracted by one or two other things she was doing at the same time.

So this piece of advice sounds almost silly and too obvious, but always strap a kid in! It is tempting to cut corners for a momentary transfer, but that’s exactly when accidents happen.

Multiply this caution by a hundredfold when there’s an older sib around.

Not only will big brother distract your attention, but he just may push baby out for whatever reason toddlers do things. (“I didn’t kno-o-o-o-o-ow!”)

Birth Marks

What Are Birthmarks?

Birthmarks are blemishes on the skin that are noticeable at birth, or shortly afterwards.

A significant proportion of newborns have a vascular birthmark – a red, pink or purple blemish that is caused by abnormal blood vessels under the skin. Some people are born with pigmented birthmarks; these are usually brown and are caused by the clustering of pigment cells.

Nobody really knows what the causes of birthmarks are. Experts say that vascular birthmarks are not hereditary.

Birthmarks are less common in Asian people, compared to individuals from other parts of the world.

The light brown moles everyone has are not birthmarks, because you’re not born with them. Honestly. True birthmarks come in a couple of other varieties:

A birthmark is A persistent visible lesion, usually on the skin, identified at or near birth; commonly a nevus or hemangioma.

Mongolian spots: blue-gray patches on the lower back or upper buttocks, usually to one side of the midline. They look a lot like a bruise, with a couple of important differences:
