The strong preference kids with autism have for certain foods places them at risk for nutritional deficiencies because their diets lack sufficient variety, according to research from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center at this year’s Pediatric Academic Societies meeting in Baltimore.
It’s not uncommon for a small child to avoid his vegetables. Most children get past this stage, and understand the importance of a well-balanced diet. For autistic children, however, they may never get passed the picky eating stage. And, this puts them at great nutritional risk.
These picky eating habits can put all children at nutritional risk; “If children are not eating foods from each of the food groups in sufficient amounts they may be at risk for nutrient inadequacy,” says Dr. Linda Bandini, of the E.K. Shriver Center, University of Massachusetts Medical School and Boston University. The study involved a little over 100 kids, half with autism spectrum disorder and half were typically developing children.
The food diaries revealed that the children with autism were posed to not meet the requirements for vitamins A, C, D, minerals, zinc, and calcium.

Bottle damage results from allowing a baby to walk around or sleep with a bottle between her teeth, which permits high-sugar juice to pool around her teeth and gums.
